The pictures "Kyo" (Tooru Nishimura), singer of Dir En Grey show the real story of the shocking concert performance during the Family Values Tour of 2006.
I had not heard of the band Dir En Grey until a day or two before I was scheduled to take pictures at The Family Values Tour, and then I only knew Dir En Grey was from Japan. I didn’t know what to expect when they walked on stage, and there is no way I would have guessed what was about to happen.
The band members of Dir En Grey walked onto the stage with little expression or emotion. Then Tooru Nishimura (Kyo) slowly started to descend into a trance-like, intense stare into the crowd. Kyo appeared to be deeply disturbed and then the music begins and Kyo bursts into action.
Kyo sings with intensity I have rarely seen in any band. He bleeds power, emotion, and adrenaline. Literally, he bleeds; Half way through the second song, he begins deeply scratching himself across his chest and stomach drawing blood. I tried to frame a few pictures of Kyo to show the scars from previous concert performances.
This is nothing. He is just getting started. Kyo stands up on a box in the front of the stage, leans back, hands and head back in a surrendering pose. Kyo starts fish-hooking and scratching at the inside of his mouth. Within seconds, blood and skin are oozing out of his mouth and down his chest. He wipes the blood all over his face and down his body. This self mutilation only intensifies Dir En Grey’s concert performance.
The pictures of Dir En Grey Concert show Kyo in the way I have only begun to describe. I was definitely impressed with the band. Kyo made other mascara/eyeliner wearing bands look like a bunch of sissies.

Dir en grey truly is a great band. I've loved them ever since their Visual Kei days... I'm just upset that the quality of their music has plummeted. Ever since they came over here their msic has been... screaming...screaming and more screaming. I really don't mind the sreaming at all... but theres absolutly NO tune to the music at all in songs such as "Agitated Screams of Maggots" ... I miss their visual Kei days, but I don't want them to go back that far, I'd like to see some quality music like their Withering to Death album... =/ And poor Kyo... hsi voice is really starting to give out on him... his voice just isn't as powerful as it use to be. ^_^ But I still love him! I really hope their up-comming album won't be dissapointing.

^ XD They ARE sissies! =/ Bunch of emo mother-fuckers try and beat THAT! I wouldnt doubt if tons of bands now had their band members mutilating themselves in an attempt to try and beat Dir en grey. =/ Losers. XD
<__< -cough- Mmkay... done ranting now! XD

As far as Kyo giving 110% he always does and us as fans could only wish to get on that level to give back to him what he has given all of us. But his vocals are still strong but you can't expect him to be at the top of his game standing outside for hours and hours in the sun. Kyo is a wonderful person and other bands will never measure up vocally or performance wise to the lives of Diru.
^_^ I loved the album withering but you can only blame yourselves for ASofM it was the fans that wanted them to do something different and more american so you got what you asked for. But if you don't like it then you should look forward to the next album which is going to be by far the best one yet...or so I'm believing.

i think i'm one of the few people who really appreciates diru for what they ARE. you'll read the above comments and witness a mourning for later years, what i say in response to these is; you lack respect for the band. a truly successful band is one that isnt afraid to take risks, that changes and evolves to their own tastes, not to satisfy anyone else's whims.
though diru are far from being my favourite band, i have a great deal of respect for them because they what they want

Kyo's intense actions happens in nearly all his concerts. I personally think that's just how he is, a risk taking REAL rocker, I have so much respect for him ever since Dir~en~Grey were still visual Kei, I only wish Kyo doesn't catch an infaction anytime soon, I'd love to go to more tours of theirs in the future. Anyways, I recommand anyone who knows the real Diru to go to the Inward Scream tour '07, it was awesome seeing them in their own tour here in America. It truly is great seeing them perform, and their performance is at the top of ANY rock and metal band in the world. You have to really see to know what I'm talking about. Kyo gives a whole new meaning to pain expressing through music. Diru forever!!! Please keep an eye out for the next tour, their new album comes out in the 7th of feb. and they'll tour in Japan afterwards. We can hope to see them touring America maybe in Fall or winter... HOPEFULLY! Keep your finger crossed. I love every member of the band... You will too if you see them live.

Kyo is incredible. I've been to a fair amount of concerts, and he is by far the person with the best stage presence.
Amazing music, amazing people. The Marrow of a Bone is fabulous, btw. Buy it. :]

I am very sure that Kyo uses artificial blood when playing with blood on stage: Last Sunday I was in Dir en grey -gig at Ankkarock-festival. Under his left nipple there was some kind dark stripe. During that gig he ripped it somehow and some ”blood” bled from it.

To JuhaPekka
I don`t think there is fake blood he uses, man`s got a LOT of scars on his chest. Really deep ones.
And if you get chance to stand in front of him you`ll see it is real, both scars and blood.
Diru took my mind and heart btw :)
